Benzene is a clear colourless liquid that
readily evaporates.
Main Sources
The combustion of petrol* by motor vehicles
accounted for 56% of total UK emissions
in 1997 with a further 4% coming from the
evaporation of petrol from vehicles. Emissions
also come from benzene producing and handling
industries and the burning of organic material.
*Diesel represents a very small source
Health Risks
Benzene is a genotoxic carcinogen (cancer
causing)
