For most businesses energy costs often represent the
largest controllable source of expenditure. Wasting
energy reduces your profitability and will increase
your CCL payments.
Significant reductions in energy use can often be made
through the implementation of energy management schemes
involving little capital investment.
An example of the steps involved in implementing and
improving energy management has been produced by Government
office for the South West and is available online
ActionEnergy (formerly EEBPP) provides a downloadable
Energy Management Advise (EMMA) package. The multimedia
application is aimed specifically at SMEs and has expert
guides to give you the right advice for your particular
company type.
For further information and to download EMMA visit
the ActionEnergy website.
Energy
Audits
The first step for any organisation wishing to reduce
energy costs is to undertake an energy audit that will
provide baseline data on how energy is purchased, managed
and used. This will help identify areas where savings
can be made and energy-efficiency measures introduced.
Free on site assessment (by a professional
energy consultant) to assess your overall energy use
and draw up a savings plan is available through ActionEnergy
(formerly EEBPP).

Monitoring
Energy Use - Degree Days
Action
Energy (formerly EEBPP) provides monthly updated
Degree Day data for eighteen regions of the UK. The
data gives an average figure for the number of days
in a month that the outside temperature was below 15.5
oC. This is known as the control temperature, above
this level it should not be necessary to heat commercial
premises as the presence of employees and office machinery
will maintain an inside temperature of 19 oC.
From the data you can calculate how much heating fuel
is required for a given number of degree-days and use
this information to check the efficiency of your heating
system and also allows for any energy saving measures
to be monitored.
