Particulate Matter
Particulate matter is present in the atmosphere
as both liquids and solids and is formed
from a mixture of organic and inorganic
substances
Main Sources
Particles are derived from three main sources;
- Primary: particles emitted directly
into the atmosphere (mainly from combustion
by motor vehicles and industry
- Secondary: particles formed from chemical
reactions in the atmosphere (mainly involving
SO2, NO and NO2 )
- Suspended coarse particles (diameter >2.5µm):
made up mainly of soils and dusts, seasalt,
biological particles and particles from construction
work.
Health Risks
Particulate matter has effects on the
respiratory and cardiovascular systems,
asthma and mortality in those with pre-existing
lung and heart disease.
