Ferrous Metals
Ferrous
scrap (iron and steel) arises mainly in the form of
bulky waste such as scrapped vehicles and kitchen goods.
These items are collected and sorted into various types
and grades by metal merchants before being transferred
to metal refiners.
Ferrous metals are recycled in steelworks by re-melting
in furnaces. Steel production in the UK uses high quality
steel types. Scrap metal is often contaminated and therefore
a large proportion (approximately 40%) of ferrous scrap
metal is exported for lower grade production abroad.
