The DETR estimates that 5 million tonnes of green waste
(vegetation and plant matter) is produced every year.
In the past recycling of green waste has been largely
neglected due to the low cost of landfilling in comparison
with recycling alternatives and the lack of a market
for recycled products (e.g. composted material). However,
this is all set to change with the annual increases
in landfill tax and the
imminent implementation of the EC
Landfill directive 1999/31/EC setting targets for
reducing the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill.

Energy Crops
Cultivating energy crops such as coppiced willow and
miscanthus grass is potentially a major source of renewable
energy. Power can be generated from these energy sources
by either conventional combustion in wood-fired power
plants or by gasification.
Short rotation coppicing is viable on a wide range
of land types and may be employed in land remediation
schemes as well as increasing overall tree cover.
There are currently no energy form biomass operations
in the Northwest of England, however a wood-fired power
station (situated just outside Carlisle) with a generating
capacity of 20MW has been proposed.
