This scheme was first run by the Countryside Commission
and then by MAFF before replacement by DEFRA and is
the Governments main green grant scheme.
Grants are available to fund schemes that encourage
wildlife and protect historical features and specifically
for farmers to follow traditional farming methods that
enhance the landscape.
Applications are accepted from anyone who owns or manages
land but the budget is limited so only schemes that
offer the best environmental value for money will be
accepted. If accepted a ten year stewardship agreement
is made to manage the land in and environmentally friendly
way in return for payment.
