England Rural Development Programme (ERDP)
Nick Brown launched the ERDP in October 2000 as a
"new direction for agriculture". Under the
EDRP the government will switch CAP funds from production-based
aids to support for the broader rural economy.
The government plans to spend 1.6bn by 2006 on measures
to advance environmentally beneficial farming practices
as well as on new measures to develop and promote rural
enterprise, diversification and better training and
marketing. This will be achieved through the funding
of land-based (agri-environment) and project-based schemes
providing financial assistance to land owners / managers
in order to achieve sustainable rural communities.
It is important to note that under ERDP regulations
farmers entering into agri-environment commitments must
respect good
farming practices across the whole of their farm
and good farming practice may be used as a baseline
for which no payments are made.
