Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES)

The RES has been allocated £152 million EU and Government money (for the period April 2001 to the end of 2006) to fund projects that help develop more sustainable, diversified and enterprising rural economies and communities. The scheme is primarily aimed at helping farmers but rural businesses and community groups are also eligible to apply.

A wide range of different areas are covered by the scheme

 

Setting up of farm relief and farm management services

Marketing of quality agricultural projects

Basic services for the rural economy and population

Renovation and development of villages and protection and conservation of the rural heritage

Diversification of agricultural activities and activities close to agriculture to provide multiple activities or alternative incomes

Agricultural water resources management

Development and improvement of infrastructure connected with the development of agriculture

Encouragement for tourist and craft activities

Protection of the environment in connection with agriculture, forestry and landscape conservation as well as with the improvement of animal welfare.


The amount of funding that an eligible project receives is dependant on the expected level of commercial return.

Projects with minimal economic return to the applicant may expect to receive funding of between 50 and 100% of total eligible costs

Projects where an economic return is the primary objective of the applicant may expect to receive funding of between 30 and 50% of total eligible costs

Projects generating substantial economic return to the applicant may expect to receive funding of between 15 and 30% of total eligible costs.

 

Project development may also be eligible for funding.
