Increasing the energy efficiency of your business is
one of the simplest and most effective ways of reducing
your impact on the environment, while at the same time
making substantial cost savings through reduced fuel
bills and associated reductions in Climate Change Levy
payments. More details about this levy, which was introduced
in 1999, are available from HM Customs & Excise.
The levy is charged at a flat rate on each kWh of energy
consumed, at the following rates:
Electricity 0.43p/kWh
Natural Gas 0.15p/kWh
Coal/lignite 1.17p/kg (approx 0.15p/kWh)
LPG 0.96p/kg (approx 0.07p/kWh)
Oil products are exempt from the levy, as these already
carry excise duty.
In addition, the following are also exempt:
Combined Heat & Power (good quality)
Renewable energy
Waste derived
Road fuels
Due to the nature and use of tourist accommodation,
energy is often wasted through lighting or heating of
areas / rooms that are not being used, or in supplying
unused appliances. There is therefore significant scope
for making savings through employing simple energy efficiency
measures.
Space heating is the largest single user of energy
accounting for 60% of fuel bills.
Lighting usually accounts for 20% of energy costs.
ü TV's left on standby can use as much as
50% of the electricity they use when on full.
