Vehicle emissions are a major source of air pollution
contributing to climate change and poor local air quality.
These environmental problems are often magnified at
popular tourist destinations where vehicle congestion,
due to the sheer number of visitors, can result in air
and noise pollution "hot spots" harmful
to the local environment, buildings and the local community.
Members of the tourism industry can play a dual role
in reducing transport use by firstly implementing schemes
to reduce emissions from their own vehicles and secondly
by encouraging visitors to reduce vehicle use while
on vacation by promoting / offering more environmentally
friendly alternatives.
