Most printer / toner cartridges can be easily recycled,
refilled or remanufactured.
Refilling
Toner cartridges for laser printers, photocopiers and
plain paper fax machines can't be refilled. However,
ink jet cartridges can be refilled and a number of companies
supply the ink and refilling equipment. Tips
for refilling inkjet cartridges
Remanufactured
Most types of toner cartridge can be re-manufactured.
Cartridges are dismantled and cleaned and any worn parts
replaced before they are refilled with fresh toner.
There are a number of companies that collect, recondition
and re-sell toner cartridges from photocopiers and printers
etc. The
United Kingdom Cartridge Recyclers Association offers
an accreditation scheme for cartridge recycling firms
established by the association and lists members that
have attained standards for toner cartridge recycling.
Charities (e.g. Cartridges4charity)
also collect toner cartridges and receive between £1
and £3 per cartridge and this can be a valuable
source of funds.
A list of charity shops in South Lakeland that collect
toner / printer cartridges is provided by the South
Lakeland district council
