Alternative Fuels)
LPG is formed as a by-product of natural gas processing
and crude oil refining and consists mainly of propane.
Gas is stored on the vehicle in special fuel tanks and
piped to the engine under control of a regulator. At
the end of the year 2000 there were approximately 617
LPG refuelling points in the UK
Detials of LPG refuelling sites in the North West of
England can be found at the Powershift
website
LPG vehicles come in two main types
|
1.
|
Vehicles can be built or converted to run solely
on LPG
|
|
2.
|
Bi-fuel vehicles can be built or converted to
run on either LPG or petrol
|
It costs approximately 1500 to convert a car to run
on LPG but applying for a Powershift
grant may reduce this cost. Once converted LPG vehicles
are more economical than conventional cars as the fuel
is very cheap (due to the low fuel duty) and LPG engines
can last two or three times longer than petrol or diesel
engines
Vehicles with an LPG option are now available direct
from manufacturers
