It costs under
6p per mile to run a small vehicle on natural gas compared
with 10p per mile for conventional vehicles
Two forms of natural gas are used to fuel vehicles :
|
1.
|
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is gas compressed
to 2,400-3,600 pounds per square inch in
specially constructed cylinders
|
|
2.
|
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is gas cooled
to -259 °C and stored in insulated tanks.
|
Natural gas must be either compressed or liquefied to
minimise the vehicle space required for fuel tanks,
therefore this fuel is best suited to large vehicles
(buses and trucks). However, most types of vehicle can
be built or converted to run on natural gas.
Vehicles are available that either run solely on natural
gas or in tandem with petrol (Bi-fuel). Large vehicles
built to run on natural gas start at around 10,000 but
smaller vehicles can be converted to run as bio-fuel
from 2,000 but applying for a
Powershift grant may
reduce these costs.
