  • Other Charges

Dependent on the nature of your business you may incur a number of other water related charges

  • Trade Effluent Charges
The water companies also levy a charge for businesses producing trade effluent and discharging it to the sewer. The charge is calculated (using the Mogden formula) based on the volume and "strength" of the waste and the type of treatment required. (N.b. to use this link effectively it is necessary to register at the Envirowise home page)

The charging scheme is fully explained in the Envirowise fact sheet: Charges for trade effluent. For more information email : sarah1.green@environment-agency.gov.uk

  • Discharging Effluent to controlled waters

If your business discharges wastewater to controlled waters (groundwater and surface water) you may require consent form the Environment agency. There is a standard application charge and if granted the Environment agency levies an annual charge based on volume of wastewater, pollutant content, receiving water and the financial year.

A flow of 1200 m3/day of treated organic trade effluent to a river in 1999-2000 would cost £4293

The charging rates for the period 1 April 2003 to 31 March 2004

Standard application charge
£722
Reduced application £103
Annual charge financial factor £558

Abstraction from Controlled Waters

Dependent on the volume of water required, abstraction from controlled waters requires a license for which the Environment Agency levies a charge.
