Three categories of wastewater can be discharged
from commercial premises
1.Domestic Sewage (foul drainage)
Effluent from staff toilets, wash basins, showers and
kitchen areas, the charge
for domestic sewage is included as part of the water
bill
2.Trade Effluent
Does not include domestic sewage and is legally defined
as "any liquid, either with or without suspended
particles, which is wholly or partly produced in the
source of any trade or industry carried out on trade
premises"
3. Rainwater
Rainwater from roofs, car parks and other outside areas
discharges into a surface drainage system. This is separate
from the domestic sewage system and is regulated by
the Environment Agency. Any liquid discharges that are
likely to be contaminated should be discharged to the
sewer after consultation with the local water company
or with the Environment Agency if discharged to controlled
waters.
Note: If your business disposes of liquid waste offsite
you have a duty of care to ensure proper and safe disposal
even after it has passed on to another party.
Before disposal of both contaminated and non-contaminated
wastewater your organisation should first consider the
possibilities of on-site recycling, minimisation and
re-use.
