Electrical and Electronic Appliances

· Electrical and Electronic Appliances (White Goods)

The DTI estimates that every year more than 900,000 tonnes of used electrical and electronic goods are discarded in the UK. Over 75% of these items are already recycled profitably, however, there remains real potential to reuse discarded equipment through refurbishment and repair.

Refurbishment of electrical equipment may provide appliances to those unable to afford them when new as well as helping local and national community projects.

Donating redundant / unwanted appliances can help your business demonstrate social responsibility as well as benefiting from any resulting publicity.

How do I get involved?

The DTI has produced a guide Unwanted White Goods: A guide to Reuse which provides information on all aspects of reusing white goods as well as case studies and contact addresses for refurbishment organisations.

Reuse of Electrical goods will also help with the compliance of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE Directive), which seeks to increase recycling and re-use of electrical and electronic equipment.
